Bottled water has a reputation for being cleaner than tap water, but the Natural Resources Defense Council reports there is no guarantee that it is any better. The label on your bottled water may make you feel like you’re drinking water that comes from a peaceful mountain stream, but that doesn’t mean the water inside is pure and pristine. Only some bottled water comes from springs or groundwater sources. So you might want to think twice before you take another sip from that bottle!
When you drink water from a plastic bottle, there’s more than just water that enters your body. You end up consuming tiny plastic particles known as microplastics and plastic debris like polypropylene, nylon, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which pose potential harm to your health. So, by the end of it you’re just drinking plastic.
Plastic bottles are never going to leave the earth. The bottles are not biodegradable in any meaningful way: what you drink in a few minutes can stick around for a thousand years. Even though plastic drinking bottles are recyclable, most end up in landfills or as litter. Also, these bottles are manufactured, filled, and shipped around the globe just so that they can reach you- which doesn’t translate into a good carbon print.
4. There are gorgeous alternatives to a plastic bottle. Choose a durable, reusable water bottle in whatever shape, size, colour or design you like. Think of it as an accessory or a fashion statement for when you want to flaunt your pro-green stance.
Be a part of the change. When you ditch disposable bottled water, you save money, live healthier, and join a movement for global sustainability. It may seem like a drop in the ocean, but it’s definitely worth more than that.
